Science: Natural Disasters
This term we have been focussing on the topic, Natural Disasters and learning about the causes behind our world’s disasters. Our grade worked in groups to design a device that would detect any type of disaster. Some of our devices detected earthquakes and provided a warning for hurricanes. Sometimes we had to modify our devices to make them work more effectively.
We made earthquake warning systems. When the earth shakes our marbles will roll down the ramps to warn people of impending danger.

Gregory was our C.S.I.R.O. Scientist for the day. What an expert!
On Wednesday the 12th November our grade went to see a presentation by a C.S.I.R.0. scientist about Natural Disasters.
Our group had to weigh each rock and then drop a rock into a tube of water. This helped us to work our the density of rocks. One of our room had a density of less than 1 which meant it floated on top of the water. We found our that even a very large piece of pumice stone will float on water.
Looking at the world.
Viscousity : Four types of liquids: oil, honey, water and………….. Which liquid let the marble inside the tube fall slowly and which let the marble drop quickly? Look at this photo and you can see the marble has dropped just above the sticker on the side.
This machine allows you to measure an earthquake’s strength.

It looks as though you had a great day with the CSIRO. It’s hard to imagine a rock that floats on water. Your blog is looking fantastic.
