C.S.I.R.O.
On the 12th of November we had a visitor fromSIRO. His name was Gregory. We went at 10:15 – 11:30.
We got into groups of two or three. I was with Chandler, The first thing we did was “All Together Now“. It was about Volcanos, I learned that Volcanos are on the edge of the tectonic plates which is called the ring of fire.
Next we did “Animated Earth“, the shapes of the continents change over millions of years and change their shape.
After that we were doing” Round the Twist”. When we poured the water the shape of the water was a funnel shaped Cyclone.
We also did” Runny Honey “all the tubes had metal balls in them so we had to time the metal balls and write it in our booklets tube A took 2 seconds tube B was half a second, tube C took 19 seconds and tube D was one second.
After we went to” Slip Sliding Away“. We had to make an avalanche by putting it up at a certain angle. To put up at 45 degrees
Then we had to go back to the classroom and talked about what we learned at CSIRO. I gave CSIRO a 9/10. It was fun.

C.S.I.R.O.
On Wednesday the 12th of November 5k and a few kids from 5p went to C.S.I.R.O. The topic was about “natural disasters”. Gregory (the man in charge) asked us what C.S.I.R.O means but we didn’t know so he told us; C-commonwealth, S-science, I-industrial, R-research, O-organization.
After he showed us how to do each activity he put us into groups of three. I was with Emily & Alycia. The first activity we did was called “how dense are you?”’ What you had to do was pick a rock out of the three containers (you got a different one each time) you then put it on the scale to see what it weighs. We had to put our finger on the tube where the water line was. When you put the rock in the tube the water rose and you had to count how much the water went up and multiplied it by 5. Rock A: 24.8 ÷ 25 = 0.992 Rock B: 57.2 ÷ 20 = 0.34 Rock C: 68.7 ÷ 25 = 0.36.
The second activity was called “slip sliding away”. There was a box/container of pebbles on a ramp with a handle. What you had to do was when you turned the handle it will make the ramp go up diagonally which would make the pebbles fall down (which makes a avalanche.)
The third activity we did was called “its runny honey”. There were four tubes of liquid (each tube had different liquid) with a marble in each one. When you turned the tube upside down you had to time how long it took the marble to get to the bottom. Tube A: 3.01 Tube B: 0.5 Tube C: 25.39 Tube D: 13.3
The next activity we did was called “round the twist” We had to put some water into a container with a small hole in the bottom and see what shape it made. Q. What shape did the water move in? A. A cylinder.
Have you seen this shape before? A. Yes, when letting the water out of the bath.
Thanks Mrs. Knight for organizing this.
One normal sunny day four friends decided to go camping up high in the woods. They hiked for several hours. When the four men reached the campsite. They noticed the campsite had a long river, that is known for its fish. John and Don couldn’t what to go fishing but they had to wait. They all got the tents, sleeping bags and all the food out of the bags too set up camp.
The next day Josh and Ben stayed at camp to make a fire and set up everything else up. Meanwhile Don and John went fishing to catch lunch.
John Started to smell something funny and look up at the mountain and noticed that the air and the top of a mountain turning grey. He turned to Don and said ‘look at that’ ‘that’s back to lets go that’s a volcano and it’s about to blow’.
When they reached the campsite they both yell ‘RUN IT’S ABOUT TO BLOW THE VOLCANO’ Josh and Ben were confused because they didn’t know the mountain was a volcano, no one did. All four of them were sprinting down the volcano when Josh got his foot stuck in on a vine. On the ground the other three tried to pull the foot out but nothing worked so Ben pull out a pocket knife and chopped the vine in half being carful on Ben’s foot. When the three of them reached the bottom of the volcano and ran to the town they all screamed out ‘RUN THE VOLCANO IS ABOUT TO BLOW RUN, THE MOUNTAIN IS A VOLCANO’.
All the women, boys and girls ran and screamed in terror. The mayor of the town ordered to try to build a trench and head the lava in to the ocean. The got there shovels and thought this might worked the lava was slow like a snail. During the build of the trench the lava hit and filled, and overfilled and headed for the town. The town burn to ash….. A few months past before the town was clean and could be rebuilt again. Now the new town is modern and not old.
On the 12th of November, we went to C.S.I.R.O. A C.S.I.R.O named Gregory came out to the school. He taught us about natural disasters and the C.S.I.R.O program. We had to get in group of 2 to 3 I was in a group of 2 with Zane.
There was 8 activities but we only did 6. My favourite activity was, “It’s Runny Honey”. In “It’s Runny Honey” you have tubes 4 tubes tube A, B, C and D. You have tip each tube upside down and time how long it takes for the marble to hit the bottom of the tube. All the tubes have different liquids so it takes different times
Another great activity was “All Together Now”. The activity was really just a puzzle, but all the pieces represented the tectonic plates in the earth. There was also red dots on all the pieces which represented volcanos on the earth. Most of the volcanos dots were on the edge of the tectonic plates.
Overall I really liked C.S.I.R.O. I had a great time doing all the activities.
